Known as one of the fastest growing cities in the state of Georgia, Smyrna is town only ten miles outside of Atlanta and in the metropolitan area. First known as Smyrna because it was the campsite of a religious group called the Smyrna Camp Group, the small town grew to a larger population due to the construction of the Western and Atlantic Railroad in 1842.
It was officially incorporated as a city in 1872. It was also the site of two separate Civil War battles, although businesses in the area were burned down during Sherman's famous March to the Sea. Throughout the 1900s, population grew because of the production of B-29 bombers during World War 2 in Smyrna, which led to more jobs in the area.
Because of its close proximity to both Marietta and Atlanta, there is plenty to do in and near Smyrna. Smyrna is very close to Austell, the home of Six Flags Over Georgia! You can always visit the local Marietta historic square if you are looking for a farmer's market or local shopping.
In Smyrna itself there are a ton of parks and recreational areas, such as Arboretum and Pond, Askew Park, Brinkley Park, Burger Dog Park, Durham Park, Jonquil Park, River Line Park, Taylor-Brawner Park, Twin Oaks Park, and Whitfield Park.
